Today, I was admiring the CN Tower standing at 553.3 m-high (1,815.3 ft). Through research, I discovered that it is now the ninth tallest free-standing structure in the world. It is still however the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere. All I can say is….wow, this is art. We are so blessed to have the CN Tower that really represents our city. I was just about to take a photo when a gentleman walked by just before I took the picture. Funny enough, it was critically acclaimed Toronto rapper M.O. Littles. I figured… why not say hello….perhaps we can have a quick conversation…maybe freestyle a little…who knows. What On What’s Good (Jovin Tardif) sits down with critically acclaimed Toronto rapper M.O. Littles to discuss his latest album #HandsDown.

1. Can you let us know a little bit about your musical background?

Growing up, I was inspired by the lyrics of 2Pac and Nas. However, it was Canada’s hip hop pioneer, Maestro Fresh Wes who first turned me onto music.  It was when I heard ‘Drop The Needle’ at my neighbours’ house when I was around 8 years old. I was instantly hooked from that point on and did everything I could to hear more. It wasn’t that easy before the internet. It wasn’t until I was about 12 years old that I started writing my own poetry and raps. I eventually recording them. M.O. Littles #HandsDown

2. Tell us about your musical style?

For me, this is always a hard question to answer. I’m a student of the game. In addition, I also have the utmost respect for hip hop culture and lyricism. That element will always be present in my music-making journey.  I don’t like to pigeonhole myself into any one style. I really like to try different things when I’m creating. For example, I’m like a mix of Pusha T and Mac Miller on the other hand I am a tad killer ;). M.O. Littles #HandsDown

3. Can you tell us about the process you took to create a theme song for a reality TV show? (were you approached for this particular project or did you approach them?)

They actually reached out to me on Instagram. They asked if I’d be interested in writing a song for them. I really liked the theme of the show. It gave opportunities to people, who may not fit the mold of your typical model, to have the full modeling experience from photoshoots to the runway. Certainly, I think we all can relate to the struggle to try to meet societal expectations. In addition, I was happy to help them celebrate diversity. I met some great people from all over the world who took part in the show. It was great to work with Brooke Hogan, who was the host. M.O. Littles #HandsDown

4. Can you tell us a little bit about some of your collaboration with others?

I’ve had the opportunity to tour with several artists.  For instance, Machine Gun Kelly & Bone Thugs N Harmony. In addition, I collaborated with some pretty amazing artists for example Juju of The Beatnuts, Sonreal and Merkules. They are featured on my newest song M.O. Littles #HandsDown. Being able to work with all these different guys has been a blessing. I have learned something new from each experience.

I got to become good friends with Juju. We share some great times and conversations with a true pioneer of the golden era hip hop.

I met Madchild when he was first starting his comeback in 2012 after his, well documented, struggle with addiction. He came to my apartment in Montreal. He smoked cigarettes and drank Redbull while he wrote his verse to our collaboration, “Beast”. It’s amazing the places and people music can introduce you to. M.O. Littles #HandsDown

5. M.O. Littles, what should we know about “Hands Down” that drops on March 20?

It’s a funny story. ‘Hands Down’ has been a long time coming. It was originally called ‘Wildstyle’. Merkules and I wrote to a beat with a Big L sample back in 2015. It has been sitting in the vault since then. Eventually, instead of trying to clear the sample, I decided to have, Massachusetts-based producer, C-Lance, remix the beat and got my good friend, Tek Luciano, on the hook. Now, almost 5 years later, the song is finally seeing the light of day. It’s a great song. I’m blessed to have such a talented group of people that are a part of it.  M.O. Littles #HandsDown
