Butterflies…that feeling you get when you are around someone special or in my case a moment where I was trying to figure out where to propose to my girlfriend. Coincidentally, a few years ago, I had this extremely nervous feeling in my stomach. I thought of a great place to propose but I started to have some doubt when I walked into a butterfly sanctuary just days before I was going to pop the question. Picture this: the Butterfly Sanctuary was home to over 2000 butterflies from a variety of species including the Red Lacewing Butterfly, the Cruiser Butterfly, the Orange Lacewing, and the Ulysses Butterfly. Just imagine free-flying butterflies soaring through a tranquil tropical aviary while holding hands with your significant other. Trust me, I had butterflies. But don’t worry, have no fear, I ended up finding the right spot to ask the question. Today, my guest is songwriter, producer, and singer Mo’ Spence. We are going to talk about music as well as her latest song “Butterflies”.

1. Can you tell us about your passion for music?

My mom was a poet and my dad was a reggae DJ. Music was imprinted in me from birth. We always had house parties and I would love singing and dance along to the music in my room. I started falling in love with r&b music at a very young age. I would buy a lot of CDs, listen religiously to the songs, sing-along, and even write out the lyrics by pausing and playing, pausing, and playing. That’s what helped me to become a songwriter.

2. How would you describe your musical style? Do you have any musical influences?

I consider myself to be a different type of artist but I definitely got that old school R&B and soul with a pinch of a reggae and hip hop feel. My biggest influences as singers are Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Kelly Price, and Keyshia Cole. My biggest influences as producers are Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Babyface, Teddy Riley, and Jermaine Dupree to name a few. They helped me to become the producer I am today!

3. Do you have any advice on the process of producing, writing, and singing music?

Don’t let anyone tell you how you should sound or create your craft. Do whatever comes from your heart, mind, and soul and it will be authentic. Just make sure to keep it sounding professional and easy on the ears.

4. You performed LIVE on multiple occasions including a performance on CBC. How do you typically prepare to perform?

I rehearse with my band at least 3 times before a performance, I try not to talk all day on the day of my performance, and I make sure to drink a lot of water and warm up my vocals right before our set.

5. What can you tell us about “Butterflies”?

“Butterflies” is a true story. It’s about my now fiance who always makes me feel loved and appreciated. I just wanted to show him that I also love him and that I also appreciate everything he does for me so I decided to make a hit song about it.
