Live from the Red Carpet
I am still stunned. The idea of being ‘Live from the Red Carpet’ has always been a dream of mine. I never knew it would come true. Thanks to Bell and TIFF, my dream became a reality. On Friday, September 6, 2019, I was contacted by a rep from Bell who let me know that “You and a friend are invited to stand on the red carpet for tomorrow’s premiere of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood featuring Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys.” At first, like most people, I laughed and thought it was a hoax. I was going home on the subway when I received this message. In between stations, I was answering questions from the representative and it sunk in. Wait a minute, this is serious. I didn’t know what to do. I got to my TTC station, I walked outside and I did what every other ordinary person would do. I called my wife. Of course, when you want to reach someone, they are busy. I ended up calling my mother-in-law. She wasn’t answering either.
I walked out of the station because I felt the need to walk home. I needed the fresh air, exercise and some time to think about what to do next. It is a red carpet premiere. I need to know what to wear, what does it entail and what is going on. I was stressed but I knew one thing for sure, I needed a suit. My wife finally called and I told her the news. She was ecstatic. It is time to “suit up”, we said over the phone.
My mother-in-law gave me a call-back and I explained the situation. Through my mother-in-law, she had mentioned that my father-in-law said: “you need a black tuxedo.” So that is what I did. Thanks to my new friends at Tuxedo Royale Dufferin, I picked up a tuxedo.
I went home and realized all this isn’t happening until Saturday. How am I going to sleep? My wife and I tried to relax and watch some Netflix before going to bed. Tomorrow was going to be a beautiful day (pun intended).
We woke up and spent most of the day getting ready. We got on the TTC and made our way down to TIFF. This was our first time at TIFF and I must say it did not disappoint. You got that sense of being in Hollywood. The stars were walking the streets, the crowd was going wild. There was so much happiness in the streets. I couldn’t wait until 5pm.
By 5pm, we met our representative. We were making our way behind the scene. Here I thought they were going to put us on a balcony thousands of feet away. My friends, we were on the red carpet. It was insane. Now it was the waiting game. As we all waited patiently, my wife and I conversed with other movie lovers, the representative and some representatives on the red carpet. We all joked around and had fun while we waited patiently for the superstars.
The first superstar we saw was the lovely Susan Kelechi Watson from ‘This is Us’
The second star was Chris Cooper from such films as “The Bourne Identity’ and ‘American Beauty’
The third star was Enrico Colantoni from ‘Veronica Mars’, ‘Flashpoint’ and ‘Remedy’
The final star, well, let’s just say he made a ‘Splash’ and got ‘Big’, Mr. Tom Hanks.
After having a good sleep, my wife and I have to say what a surreal moment. As movie lovers, it was just a shock to see our favourite superstars in front of us on the red carpet. We want to thank the superb host, Bell Canada. We will never forget what you did for us.
It is not just a hashtag, Bell truly does love movie lovers.
