Interview with Actor and Filmmaker Billy Bryk
Today on What On What’s Good with Jovin Tardif, I am here with film and television actor William Nicholas Bryk aka Billy Bryk. Fun fact: he’s the youngest son of actor Greg Bryk. In our interview, Bryk talks about working in the film industry, his Lackluster podcast with Finn Wolfhard, and more.
1. What attracted you to begin a career as an actor? Did your father influence your career?
My Dad was actually my first acting coach. My grade school used to put on these shockingly professional musical productions. They were kind of amazing and the kids would rehearse every day after school for months. I wanted to play a big part but I couldn’t sing (which allegedly is unavoidable in a musical), so my Dad took it upon himself to prep me for my audition. I think it’s really funny and kind of ridiculous that a professional adult actor was doing an intense scene study with his 9-year-old for Charlie and Chocolate Factory Jr. The Musical. I did end up getting the part though.

2. You played Billy Clanton in Wynonna Earp. Any fun behind-the-scenes stories with other cast members either on or off-set?
Everyone was great. We were shooting the last couple of weeks during the NBA playoffs and a few of us are huge Raptors fans so we’d get pizza and watch the games at a castmates apartment. They’d also usually let me take the leftovers back to my hotel which was a nice bonus. I had no idea how good the pizza is in Calgary.

3. Can you tell us about the comedy podcast @Lacklusterpod on Headgum?
I have a podcast with my best friend Finn Wolfhard called Lackluster Video. We’re huge fans of movies so every week we will pick one to talk about. Each episode ends with us using random generators to get a movie title and two actors. We take the results of these random generators and try to pitch the fake movies to each other.
4. Describe what it was like working with director Nick Jarecki on Dreamland.
Dreamland was the first movie I ever shot. Nick was really excited about collaborating with the actors. The script was great but he wanted us to really play with the scenes in the moment. I got to work with Evangeline Lilly who is phenomenal and was also so kind to me.

5. Do you have any interesting stories about Ghostbusters: Afterlife?
We filmed part of it in a town called Drumheller, Alberta. It is know as the
dinosaur capital of the world because of the high concentration of fossils located in the area. The whole town is dinosaur themed. Nearby Drumheller is the World’s Largest Dinosaur – a 27 metres (90 ft) high Tyrannosaurus Rex. I got a pretty wicked dinosaur mood-ring that I still have today.

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.
