Synopsis of the film

In the not too distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley). Viola is a mysterious girl who crashes on his planet. Women have disappeared from the planet. The men are afflicted by “the Noise”. The noise is a force that puts all their thoughts on display. In this dangerous landscape, Viola’s life is threatened. Todd vows to protect her.

Statement from author and co-screenwriter Patrick Ness

The Noise is everything you think, fantasize about, wish for, and believe in. It’s the human mind, completely unedited. The disparity between the sexes, which was triggered by The Noise, makes up so much of the history of New World. It’s ever-present – and an intense part of the experience of the film.

Daisy Ridley statement

Like the books, our film is an amazing action-adventure, as well as a compelling look at gender politics.  What happens if something drastic happens to one gender and not the other? How does that affect the dynamics within a community? Viola and Todd are on a big adventure, but there is so much underneath that they’re figuring out.

Release date

The movie will be available on March 5, 2021.
