How about an interview with a recent graduate? I reached out to Jennifer Boorman from Nice2Sparkle Studios to discuss her time at Trebas. Today, in a short segment, we can get a bit of information on Audio Engineering Technologies & Production and DJ Arts.
1. Jennifer Boorman (Nice2Sparkle), describe your experience at Trebas Institute – Toronto in the Audio Engineering Technologies & Production and DJ Arts?
My experience at Trebas Institute – Toronto was exciting, intense, nerve-wracking, and amazing all at the same time. It was one year that was jammed packed of knowledge that could have been expanded into a 2-year program that I would have happily tackled. The venture into the Audio Engineering program was completely new and different from my previous workplace roles. Every instructor that I encountered at Trebas was well versed in their expertise and very passionate to teach. Being a DJ is an art form that is not easily taught. The same can be said for the Audio Engineering technical aspects as well. You can teach the theory, but having a natural curiosity to explore and learn more on your own can only make you better at shaping the sound and being creative in the process.
2. Can you tell us more about the Voice Over Artistry world?
Being recently new to the Voice Over Artistry world, I only wish I had the confidence and the internet to start off much sooner! With technology making the world a global village, it affords many individuals to dig in and explore this world online and work remotely from home or office. I am scratching the surface now, and not giving up. V.O. North is an annual conference that is a cornucopia full of industry information and networking opportunities to get the goods on how to get in and be successful in the VO world. I had the unique opportunity to attend this conference that was held in Toronto this past September at the Gladstone Hotel.
3. Jennifer Boorman. how would you describe a typical Post Production Mixing experience? What does it entail?
The Post Production Mixing experience is something that I consider myself still an intermediate novice. The wisdom I can impart is that it takes a good team of people on the same page who have a tremendous amount of patience. Depending on the project and its specifications, it entails many hours of detailed work in editing, sync sound effects, background ambiance, music, and ADR, which is Automated Dialog Replacement. The goals are to ensure the finished project’s audio is in line with the video and all background, sound effects and dialogue hit all their marks. But there is always more, audio levels and filters must be run through plugin sources to make sure all the unwanted sound is filtered out and that levels meet specific audio industry standards.
4. What tools or programs do you typically use to create your own blend of music, Jennifer Boorman?
Absolutely floored by how many DAW ( Digital Audio Workstations ), tools and gadgets there are to choose from.
Currently, I use a hybrid blend of Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic Pro X and Garage Band. I love the freedom to explore and play with the features that each DAW can offer. I come up with an idea in Garage Band and then bounce it out to Pro Tools to experiment further with effects and equalization to shape the sounds. From there, I just continue to play until I feel the groove or beat sounds good. I really love the creative freedom. My two favourite microphones in my toolbox are the Rode NT1-A Vocal Condenser Mic and the IK Multimedia iRig Digital Studio Mic.
5.Jennifer Boorman (Nice2Sparkle), just for fun. Do you have any unusual hobbies?
I have a quite few hobbies, but one of them is collecting strange, cute and unusual erasers. I have been collecting on and off since I was about 6 years old. To date I have approximately 300 erasers, some are sets and duplicates.
