Interview with Pop Artist Laura Pieri
Today on What On What’s Good with Jovin Tardif, I am here with Pop Artist Laura Pieri. Laura was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Singer/Songwriter Pieri quickly became one to watch after her 2018 debut single, “I Will Follow You.” Now, she is working with Grammy Award Winning Producer Cory Rooney. Rooney has produced and written for many multi-platinum artists such as Michael Jackson, Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Marc Anthony, and many more. Today in our interview, we discuss singing growing up, her transition from Sao Paulo to New York, meeting Cory Rooney for the first time, her new track “ALL I NEED”, the remix of ‘All I need’ and much more.
1. What sort of music were you singing growing up?
It took me a long long time to get comfortable singing in front of people. I used to sing for my family and make them sit through my pretend-concerts. I would sing whatever my mood dictated, so needless to say days, when I was listening to Celine Dion, weren’t pleasant to my family. They enjoy it more now that I’ve improved haha!
2. What was it like moving from Sao Paulo, Brazil to New York in 2014 for school?
Intense. The cultural shock was a lot harder than I expected. It really felt like an entirely new world. I don’t think I’m even fully adjusted and it’s been years now. I grew up in Brazil, my whole family is still there, so my life in some sense is still there. I definitely think I’m more adjusted, but I do miss the food like crazy!
3. Describe meeting Grammy Award Winning Producer Cory Rooney for the 1st time?
It always feels like it’s the first time. He is a living legend, and has become practically a mentor to me. It makes me want to work harder, it motivates me and it pushes me forward. He really has taught me almost everything I know about music. When I met him I was just passionate about it, he’s taught me how to study my craft, how to listen properly, how to understand music the right way. It’s an honor to work with him and I don’t think that will ever go away.
4. What can you tell us about your latest song “All I Need”?
“All I Need” is about love. I feel like we’re so used to love stories having to be this passionate ‘I can’t sleep, I can’t eat’ kind of thing. “All I Need” preaches the opposite. You don’t have to be going insane for someone else. It can be something that’s chill and happy and good. It’s not just about romantic love. It can be about yourself — talking to yourself or for yourself. That’s kind of when I knew that the song was really special.
5. Can we get some insight on the remix video of “All I Need”?
I was bored !! I was soooo bored!! Cory sent me the remix and I would dance around the house when I got bored of doing nothing. I figured since I already dance to it I should at least record myself. Then the idea for the remix video came about. I shot all of it on my phone with a ring light I got to do makeup with. It’s not a serious video but it isn’t trying to be one. I just let go and had a lot of fun with it!
6. What activities do you enjoy outside of music?
Reading and painting. I’m currently re-reading Women Who Run With Wolves, by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes. It’s been one of my favorite books since I first read it in college and I’m enjoying revisiting it. I occasionally indulge in some reality TV though. I just binged through all seasons of Selling Sunset
