Interview with SOCAN Award-Winning Canadian Folk-Pop Artist Alicia Toner

Today on What On What’s Good with Jovin Tardif, I am here with Alicia Toner. Alicia is a SOCAN Award-Winning Canadian Folk-Pop Artist. The Canadian songwriter is gearing up to release her sophomore album at the end of June. Ahead of her second full length project, she will be releasing her brand new single, “Joke’s On Me” on Friday, June 11th 2021. Other songs by the musical artist include “Call My Name” and “Have It All“. In our interview, we discuss her favourite musical artist Brandi Carlile, her creative process, her new album “Joan” coming soon, and much more.

1. One of your favourite artists is Brandi Carlile. Can you tell us a favourite song and why?

I was first introduced to Brandi during a really difficult time in my life and had her album ‘Bear Creek‘ playing on repeat. I dove deep into her entire catalogue and it’s really hard to pick a favourite song. I’ll say “The Eye” because it’s a perfect example of what she and the twins do so well. Excellent writing and killer harmonies.

2. Describe your creative process. Do you have any songwriting tips for new songwriters?

I spent a lot of time thinking I had to get really good at the formula for writing songs and that I had to be good at writing with a lot of other people. Songwriting, to me, is extremely personal and it comes when it comes. Some people are great at showing up for their genius everyday but that’s not how I do my best work. Once I became comfortable with my own process and took the pressure off trying to be something I wasn’t, I started writing better songs. I still write with others to challenge myself and to learn more, but I take comfort in the fact that I can bring that new knowledge back to my own process.

3. What was it like growing up in New Brunswick? Any fun stories?
Fun stories… about growing up in NB? My house got broken into a lot.

Fun stories… about growing up in NB? My house got broken into a lot.

Break-ins aside, I love being from New Brunswick. I think it’s one of the most underrated provinces in Canada in terms of its natural beauty and the people it churns out. So many incredible artists are from or have roots in NB. Most of my family are still there and as soon as those borders are open, it’s the first place I’ll be driving.

4. What can we learn about your new single, “Joke’s On Me” available on Friday, June 11th 2021

It’s about your last chance to escape a bad situation when the only person who can save you is you.

5. What was it like working with producer Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies, Matthew Good, Amanda Marshall) and Peter Fusco (Matthew Good, The Heartbroken) on your upcoming single “Joke’s On Me”?

Stuart and Peter are amazing at what they do. I’ve been working with them since 2015 and have developed a trust in them to take my folk songs and make them cool. Joke’s On Me is a prime example of this trust.

6. What else can we expect from your sophomore album available in June 2021?

You can expect some personal, heartfelt songwriting with some excellent production. I’m proud of this album and I hope you all listen and enjoy it too.
