Interview with Actress/Stunt performer Briana Skye
Today on What On What’s Good with Jovin Tardif, I am here with Briana Skye. Briana is an actress from Palm Springs, California. In 2015, she moved to Vancouver, B.C to begin her acting and stunt performing career. Since then, Briana has landed multiple roles including Netflix’s Dangerous Lies, The CW’s Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, SyFy’s The Magicians, SyFy’s Van Helsing and more. Briana is also an international model and has been published in Palm Springs Life Magazine, Cielo Magazine, and Paper Magazine to name a few.
1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m an American actor and model born and raised in Palm Springs, California. I’m Italian, German, Filipino, and Spanish. I love being mixed and having different cultural influences. Traveling, art, sunshine, and the ocean make my heart happy. I love coffee and I’m animal obsessed.
2. When did you first realize that you wanted to work in the entertainment industry
After watching Christina Ricci in The Addams Family.
3. What was it like moving to Vancouver, B.C in 2015 to begin your acting career?
It was a very unexpected and exciting chapter in my life. I initially moved up here on a whim to be with an ex-love. I had never visited Canada before and I really had no idea what to expect; other than knowing Vancouver was beautiful, considered Hollywood North, and everyone told me… “I hope you like rain.” It pretty much turned out to be just that – beautiful, booming and wet. Six years later, I find myself blessed for starting my acting career here and for the opportunities I’ve had breaking into the film industry. That being said, it’s now time for a new adventure. I really miss home and you can’t take the Cali out of this girl; so I’m stoked to move back to LA.
4. Can you tell us about your training?
When I first moved to Vancouver I started working for the lovely and badass casting director Jackie Lind. Working on the opposite side of the camera was a very enlightening experience, which definitely strengthened my work and confidence as an actor. It taught me to make solid choices and to commit to them, to not be afraid to be different, and to get out of my head and let things go. I also was very fortunate to book early on in my career, and in my opinion, first hand experience is the most valuable.
5. What do you love about acting?
I have always been a creative soul. I love all things art, and I love to play. Acting is all about real human connection but also imagination. It’s when reality slow dances with fantasy. Whenever I act, I feel like I dig deep into old aspects of myself and also discover new parts of me that I never knew existed. The fact that I get to do this for a living is beyond me.
6. Out of roles that you have performed, which one is your favorite and why?
I’ve had some amazing on set experiences but I would have to say my absolute favorite was working on Van Helsing. The cast and crew of this show were so cool and made me feel so loved. Vampires are sick. I love horror and action; the bloodier the better. So playing a vampire/human was a lot of fun!
7. Do you have any fun behind-the-scenes stories with the cast of SyFy’s Van Helsing?
Oh boy.. I don’t think I’m allowed to share any of these stories [laughs]. Here’s something that was kind of wild: We shot episode 5 of season 5 out in Kamloops, B.C. on the property of an old 1907 tuberculosis hospital, which later became a psychiatric institution. There were definitely some intense spooky feeling on the property. I remember after this one take I went back to sit in my cast chair and overheard one of the makeup ladies saying she saw a ghost out in the field, and again later in the house. She said she saw it as a dark shadowy figure. When I asked her if the ghost was still in the house where we were shooting, she said “Yeah of course. He lives here.” Curious to see if he made an appearance in the episode!
8. If you can only pick one actor/actress to work with, who would it be and why?
Leo…I mean that’s pretty self explanatory. He was also my first celebrity crush.
9. Do you have a dream role?
Catwoman. Seriously, she’s just the coolest.
10. Do you have any hobbies outside of acting?
I love painting and writing poetry. Chilling at the beach. Taking polaroids and shooting on my 35mm Nikon. Boxing at ballet. Listening to records and vintage shopping. Taking care of my plants and doing yoga. My absolute favorite thing is travelling, and if I could be doing anything right now, I would be riding away on a horse.
