Helter Skelter: An American Myth
Helter Skelter: An American Myth will be on Hollywood Suite on Thursday, February 11 at 9pm ET. A new episode premiering weekly through March 18.
It is a six-part docuseries directed by Lesley Chilcott about Charles Manson.
On January 25, 1971 (50 years ago), Charles Manson and three members of his “family” were convicted of the brutal 1969 murders of nine people. They included Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, and Abigail Folger.
I had the opportunity to check out the series. The story focuses on many different topics.
In one episode in particular, they focus on Manson, his upbringing and what might have motivated him psychologically to become a cult leader.
Another theme was how Manson convinced his followers that the Beatles’ White Album was a coded message intended specifically for them.
They also analyze his desire to be a famous musician. At one point, Dennis Wilson from the Beach Boys introduces him to many music executives. As time went by, you learn why Dennis distanced himself from the situation.
Former Family Members Catherine Share, Dianne Lake and Stephanie Schram also appear in the series to reflect on their time within the Manson Family.
The last part of the series focuses on the most sensational trial of the 20th century. It includes a circus of interruptions that you wouldn’t believe.
Overall, the series was very difficult story to watch. It’s hard to believe that an individual can be this dark.
His desperation to be famous took a terrible turn. When he didn’t get what he wanted, many people suffered the consequences.
