Saved by the Bell 2020 (by: Jovin Tardif)
Who knew that I would be talking about ‘Saved by the Bell’ in 2020. It’s funny that just in 2019, the cast reunited to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Wow! Time flies. Okay…it’s Friday…ring the bell school is out.
Yes! When I was younger, I used to watch ‘Saved by the Bell’. It aired on NBC starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack Morris), Dustin Diamond (Screech Powers), Lark Voorhies (Lisa Turtle) Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (Kelly Kapowski), Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano), Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater) and Dennis Haskins (Principal Richard Belding). We watched our Bayside High students Zack, Slater, Screech, Kelly, Jessie, and Lisa growing up. But before ‘Saved by the Bell’ there was a short series called ‘Good Morning, Miss Bliss’ that first introduced a few of the students above in Junior High.
I’m not entirely sure why, but at the beginning, I thought ‘Saved by the Bell’ was like watching ‘Archie Comics’ on the TV screen. I suppose this crossed my mind because of all the different rivalries that were happening around the school. For instance, Zack and Slater fought for the love of Kelly. Screech pursues his classmate Lisa but is consistently turned down by her. Jessie speaking up when she felt something wasn’t right. However, over time they would discuss some more serious social issues, such as drug use, driving under the influence, homelessness, remarriage, death, women’s rights, and environmental issues. The show continued as we watched them tackle the college years. ‘Saved by the Bell: The College Years’. Of course, we can’t forget the two movies as well (Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style and Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas)
In the new series coming soon, essentially, the series will follow the children of the original characters. The new faces of Bayside High include Josie Totah, Mitchell Hoog, Belmont Cameli, Dexter Darden, Haskiri Velazquez, and Alycia Pascual-Pena. A few of the originals will return. Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack) is now a local politician. Mario Lopez (Slater) will be a gym teacher at Bayside High. I also heard Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie) will also be making appearances on the show.
